Vitalik Buterin : Next year's Hegota upgrade will be to the Ethereum for the last time.
Title: Ethereum Next year Hegota upgrade designated as the last routine fork of 2030 route focused on verification speed and privacy
Description: Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin says next year's Hegota upgrade could be the last routine fork. This article discusses his September 27 blog post, long-term roadmap, two protocol changes, and verification, speed, and anti-quantum design directions for 2030, with subsequent implications for development, validation, and user experience.

Once forked, why is it said to be the last conventional upgraded pump?
Ethereum ( ETH ) co-founder Vitalik Buterin suggested in a personal blog post published on September 27 that the Hegota upgrade scheduled to land next year is likely to be the network's last routine fork; subsequent engineering focus will shift toward more underlying layers such as recursive STARK, automated formalization of validation, highly optimized consensus and anti-quantum security. For readers, this judgement translates an upgraded narrative by functional version iterations into a roadmap for reconstructing main lines based on verification models and safety assumptions.
After Hegota, recursive STARK and anti-quantum design became mainstream
In this article, Vitalik Buterin compares the 2015 , 2025 and 2030 versions of the Ethereum with models originally depicted in Bitcoin ( BTC ), and cites a long-term roadmap draft called Strawmap. According to him, Hegota is likely to be the last normal forking fork that will still be recognizable by developers as of 2015, if we look at it according to Strawmop.
He believes that all work after Hegota will involve recursive STARK, a type of cryptography proof; subsequent directions also include automated formalized validation, highly optimized consensus and quantum security.
Hegota is still in early planning: FOCIL and frame transactions
The Hegota page on Ethereum .org lists two planned changes: Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists (FOCIL) and frame transactions.
FOCIL allows the validator committee to come up with a list of transactions that block builders must comply with; frame transactions allow each account to run its own validation logic and opt for anti-quantum signatures. For developers, this means that the protocol layer is beginning to provide more flexible methods of verification and future migrations into reserved space in cryptography ; for nodes and users, it's more about how these two changes ultimately land in the short term rather than regarding Hegota as an already standardized version.
From 2015 to 2030: Verification methods, confirmation times and changes in decentralized roles
Beyond the upgrade plan, Vitalik Buterin also makes a broader judgement: after the Lean upgrade, Ethereum may continue to retain its blockchain label largely for historical reasons. He writes that almost every core attribute of blockchain has changed or is about to change. The 2015 versus 2030 comparison in the article was sourced from Vitalik Buterin .[citation needed] His 2030 blueprint revolves around verification, speed and privacy.
To take validation as an example, in the 2010 model nodes download and re-execute each block; by 2030, he expects nodes to be re-executed using Peer Data Availability Sampling (PeDAS) instead of verifying cryptography proofs. Users will sense change through speed: his goals include a slot time of about 4 to 8 seconds, and certainty of about 8 to 32 seconds.
He also mentions that decentralized used to be primarily a cost for security, but might help performance in a few limited scenarios as well since distributed networks can store data and run computations in parallel. However, there are still open problems with building this design: zero-knowledge proof is still difficult to make efficient and secure even though AI tools have helped optimize it; managing access to very large-scale states may be more challenging.[2]
Follow-up: sequence of upgrades, time between testnet and mainnet
There are two upgrades to be delivered for Ethereum before further work can begin in full. Hegota is expected to follow after Glamsterdam; the Sepolia testnet fork of Glam Amsterdam is scheduled for October 6. Ethereum .org lists a fourth quarter 2026 as an on-line date, with no confirmation yet. Opinions were first published by BeInCrypto
