Galaxy raises $100 million for Sky token as institutional adoption is tested
On September 23, Galaxy Digital and Sky Protocol jointly announced that the company had incorporated $100 million worth of sUSDS/Sky-branded earned savings token into its balance sheet, while approving it as collateral for institutional customers. This move means sUSds is officially entering Galaxy's institutional trading business system, although both parties did not disclose actual customer adoption in their announcements.
Mortgage approved, savings continued
The central attraction of this arrangement is that when the customer uses sUSDS as collateral for a loan, its holdings remain sustainable throughout the entire term. This means that while the borrower gains liquidity, the savings position will not be suspended due to interest calculation.
Sky states that the interest rate is determined by community governance and funded from overall agreement surpluses. The number of sUSDS for holders remains constant, but each token redeemable USDS increases as earnings accumulate. It should be noted that savings rates are not fixed and future earnings may fluctuate.
Details are missing, actual adoption scale to be seen
The announcement described the Treasury's configuration as complete, but did not give any key data such as the amount of initial loan collateralized by sUSDS and customer borrowing balances. How this will actually work depends on the terms of the loans and interest rate levels over the lifetime, which have yet to be disclosed.
A previous industry analysis noted that the crypto lending space is taking advantage of Wall Street's credit rules to rebuild institutional confidence after experiencing an industry trust crisis in 2022. It remains to be seen whether this move will lead to wider institutional adoption.
Grove offers $500 million in funding for a long-standing partnership
The partnership between Galaxy and Sky did not begin with this announcement. In July of this year, Sky's eco-agency Grove announced the creation of a $500 million warehouse financing facility to fund institutional loans initiated by Galaxy.
According to a Sky Frontier Foundation update released on September 17, as of September 1, Sky's agency has about $304 million in assets at Galaxy, driven largely by Grove. The figure reflects the size of Sky s leverage over Galaxy prior to this new announcement.
The $100 million allocation of the Treasury allows both parties to work together with a clear balance sheet; and the opening up of collateral eligibility verifies whether sUSDS can be extended to broader institutional lending scenarios, pending first loan or unpaid balance data disclosure.
