The trade finance industry, which underpins the cash flows of global trading firms, is experiencing a stablecoin-driven transformation. Euro pegged coin issuer Qivalis revealed that it has accessed 37 European banks in the past year and observed profound shifts from cross-border payments to collateral flow.

From cross-border payments to trade finance

The impact of stablecoins on cross-border payments has been well documented, but Qivalis CEO Jan-Oliver Sell notes that a more fundamental shift is taking place in this subset of the trade finance landscape. After interacting with various stakeholders across the ecosystem, he found that trade finance in regions such as Asia, Latin America and Africa have become key areas for stablecoin applications.

Trade finance funds that specialize in providing financial instruments and buying commodities are also undergoing a transformation: their entire supply chain operations are increasingly based on stablecoins, even without the need to convert them back into fiat currencies.

The supply chain is running out of cash, and the turnover on mortgages has shrunk from days to minutes.

Sell's interview illustrates the reality of this change: A supplier in East Africa made a transaction with an object in Kazakhstan using stablecoins, without even having to convert them into fiat currency.

The core change in this model is the efficiency of moving mortgages around. He explains: "The speed at which you move your mortgage has been greatly accelerated, and it's changed the entire business model so that you can rotate a mortgage in minutes instead of days".

In traditional trade finance processes, collateral and settlement often rely on multi-layered interbank intermediation with a daily cash cycle; whereas when both upstream and downstream supply chains accept stablecoin settlements, the improvement in capital turnover efficiencies directly changes pricing and operation of trade finance operations.

Follow-up

The speed with which Qivalis, as a euro-denominated coin issuer, has accessed 37 European banks in one year reflects the increasing involvement of traditional financial institutions in Europe's stablecoin infrastructure. Follow-up signals that are worthy of attention include: whether trade finance stablecoin settlement will expand further from emerging markets such as Asia, Latin America and Africa to mainstream banking systems in Europe; and if the euro denominated coins can find differential positioning within the USD-dominated market for stablecoins.
