Bitcoin expected volatility stays near yearly low as S&P 500 gains 21%

Bond volatility rises sharply while Bitcoin and Wall Street remain calm.

Bond traders are paying more for protection against swings in interest rates, while bitcoin expected volatility has stayed close to its yearly low. The split appeared after the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield briefly touched 5.2% on Thursday and then eased to 5.163%.

Yields, oil and inflation pressure

Government bond yields are rising around the world. The Middle East war has lifted oil and diesel prices, making the inflation picture more uncertain and prompting questions about how much tighter central banks might still need to go.

That backdrop has pushed bond traders to pay more for protection against rate moves. The contrast is striking because the S&P 500 has not simply followed the bond stress. MOVE was last at a comparable level in March, when the S&P 500 was near 6,350. The index has since climbed to 7,704, a gain of about 21%.

Volatility readings split

In a 20-day reading, the VIX-MOVE correlation dropped to -0.06. It is negative for the first time since April 2024, but the value is near zero. The BVIV-MOVE correlation is more distinctly negative at -0.37, a reading among the lowest in years.

Bond volatility has increased, yet bitcoin expected volatility has stayed close to its yearly low. That combination suggests that stress in the bond market has not produced a matching rise in bitcoin expected volatility.

What the divergence shows

The main takeaway is that markets are reading the same macro backdrop in different ways. Rising yields, higher oil and diesel prices, and tighter central bank expectations are pushing bond traders to seek more protection. At the same time, the S&P 500 has extended its rise from near 6,350 to 7,704, and bitcoin expected volatility has not moved with the bond market.

CoinDesk reported this week that rising yields by themselves have shown little reliable link to bitcoin returns. That weak connection helps explain why a move in government bond yields does not automatically become a clear pattern for bitcoin returns.
