Mastercard $250 billion expansion, the truth behind it is not what appears on the surface
United States Digital bank SoFi and payment giant Mastercard announce that SoFiUSD stablecoin settlement has been officially launched in SoFi's projects debit card and credit card , with the cooperation plan announced by both parties in March this year entering into the actual production phase. This is the first large-scale embedded mainstream card organization settlement system issued by the bank, which is indicative of observing the progress of stablecoin , landing in a traditional payment network.
From planning channel to actual settlement
When the two companies announced their collaboration in March, SoFiUSD settlement was only an option for the future. In a September announcement, both companies confirmed that transactions on the SoFi bank card project were already running at blockchain .
SoFi expects the project to handle more than $25 billion in card transactions annually after its migration is complete. Note that this is an estimate of card transaction activity at final operational status, and SoFi does not disclose the amount or percentage currently actually settled through SoFiUSD. Without this factor, readers cannot equate the overall size of the project with stablecoin actual settlement throughput.
Cardholders are insensitive, merchants take what they need
The feature of this arrangement is that the token -based settlement channel has been placed behind a user's familiar swipe card experience. SoFi says merchants do not need to own stablecoin or deploy new infrastructure, and merchants using its Big Business Banking platform can have their clearing funds instantly accessed into SoFi bank accounts for round-the-clock cash availability.
However, the September announcement does not name any external merchants that have actually used on-chain settlement and only indicates that discussions are still ongoing with United States large merchants. In addition, the announcements do not provide back-and-forth comparison data on settlement timeliness and cost. A transaction runway can only prove that the system is in operation, and actual revenues at the merchant level need to be verified by subsequent data.
Bank deposits are not equal to token equity
A distinction needs to be made between merchants who receive bank account deposits and participants in on-chain receiving SOFID, which hold different claims. SoFiUSD is issued by a national banking license-holding SoFi Bank regulated under the United States Monetary Supervisory Authority (MSA), with issuers stating that their goal is to exchange dollars on a one-for-one basis. However, according to the terms of SOFid, direct redemptions are open only to approved SoFi customers signing separate agreements and subject to conditions and fees, and may also be suspended or revoked in certain circumstances.
The protection mechanism is also different. SoFi's product disclosure explicitly states that the SoFiUSD itself does not qualify as a deposit and is not covered by FDIC or SIPC insurance, potentially exposing latency to disruption or permanent loss. In terms of reserves, the announcement says that token reserves are predominantly cash-based, but the issuance clause simultaneously allows for liquidity in prices such as cash and other legally permitted instruments without committing to an arbitrary fixed composition at any point in time.

Mastercard had outlined broader settlement options in June this year, including regulated stablecoin and multiple fiat currency settlement point arrangements, mentioning that USDC already supports early on-chain settlements in some markets, while the Paxos-issued token , RLUSD and SoFiUSD are planned to be supported on several networks. The landing of SoFi means one bank will issue token into actual use, but Mastercard has not disclosed how much of each future traffic is due for token .
SoFi and Mastercard have transitioned a well-known bank issue, the stablecoin , from paper to physical channels. The true test metrics for actual token settlement volumes, external merchant adoption, and measurable improvements in cash-on-account efficiency are yet to be disclosed.
