Guided tours

According to data tracked by the crypto agency trading infrastructure company Talos, RWA ( RWA ) and trading volume in its coverage of markets linked to stocks, commodities and indices have soared from less than $1 billion this January to $18.8 billion between September 3-9, accounting for 18.5% of total futures on these platforms. This change means that derivatives business on crypto exchanges is expanding rapidly into traditional asset areas, with new competitive pressures facing demand for transactions on altcoin .

Traditional assets perpetual futures Rapid release

The derivatives business of crypto exchanges has long been built around perpetual futures , and today this contract structure is used to package trading floors for crude oil, gold, stocks, indices and even shares in pre-IPO companies.

Talos data also showed that trading volume of the cryptocurrency had declined during the comparison period, while it was traditional asset contracts which filled in the gap.

This change in product structure poses a real competitive threat to altcoin : traders no longer need to access markets with leverage, volatility or round-the-clock trading through the new token .

Hyperliquid traders are clearly stratified

Talos statistics show that traditional assets perpetual futures accounted for 28% of Hyperliquid 's futures trading volume and 24.8% in Binance . When the weekly crude lead increase in Brent Crude broke $100, indicating the crypto platform has the ability to take on incidental transaction needs unrelated to cryptocurrency .

CoinDesk Research reports that in August CEX trading volume had a compound annual growth rate of 12.7%, reaching $4.29 trillion; including 18.7% increase in cash, 11.3% increase in derivatives and 2.37% increase in the turnover of traditional assets to $602 billion.

DefiLlama is based on the HIP-3 framework of Hyperliquid ((which allows external developers to deploy markets, including stocks and commodity-related contracts), dividing new wallets into two groups according to their first transaction. Between January 1st and June 30th, a total of 169,514 new wallet were assigned as prioritized for RWA accounting for 31.7% of all new portfolios and generating $111.6 billion in transactions (representing 31.5% of total new users).

Discrepancy between retained earnings and activity

Notably, the RWA preferred wallet only contributed 8.3% of new user master transaction fees. Of these wallets 83.6% of trading volume remained within the RWA , while 22.8% of other prioritized wallets flowed to RWA , contributing about 40% of Hyperliquid 6.

Follow-up analysis of DefiLlama showed that 80.9% of the RWA preferred wallets never crossed over to another market, and 82% of other preferred ones did not enter either. Cross-market trading was mainly concentrated among high frequency traders whose user groups were roughly divided into three categories: those who adhered to the products of RWA , those who remained loyal to the crypto markets, and a smaller group of high-frequency core users who saw both types as opportunities for trade.

Although traditional assets have reached $18.8 billion, wallet stratification and the decline in retained earnings complicate claims of a large migration of funds.

altcoin 's war for attention intensified

CryptoRank statistics show that 10 major CEX s had 351 new listings in Q2 2018, the lowest level since Q3 2023.

Gate contributed 573 disposal items in the first half of the year, accounting for nearly 60%; MEXC was not actually included in this part of the analysis due to very little disclosure about the disposals. The Institute's data showed that 58.5% of early bStocks users simultaneously used perpetual futures or direct stock trading, indicating an overlap between the two categories but did not reflect asset rotation.

For altcoin holders, the real risk lies in marginal competition: limited balance sheets of market makers, limited resources for exchange promotion and limited attention from traders, with familiar stocks and commodities now competing for resources within the same application and underwriting system.

The Hyperliquid HIP-3 mechanism also introduces a new economic structure: the deployer can retain up to 50% of transaction fees generated by its assets; fees that flow into the protocol assistance fund will be automatically converted to HYPE and destroyed, but only some builder market activity touches on the relevant mechanisms.

Total growth divided by agreement revenue

Figures from 21Shares' calculations reflect this differentiation: Hyperliquid total fees rose to $419.3 million in the first half of 2026, up from $320 million for the first six months of 2025, while core agreement revenues at the cash-back platform decreased to $305.3 million, down from $317.5 million.

In September, Hyperliquid total outstanding contracts rose from $6.6 billion to $8.8 billion, with crypto perpetual futures remaining dominant but HIP-3's share dropping from 34% to 25%.

Traditional asset trading sometimes fills the gap in crypto trading volume , and sometimes grows synchronously with crypto asset . It brings new wallets, enriches inventory users' product choices, and creates a royalty flow that is distributed between protocols, builders, and token mechanisms, allowing exchanges to reduce their reliance on cryptographic cycles. But for altcoin the outlook is more vague: Cryptocurrency trading infrastructure can flourish even as demand growth slows underpinning it.
