Aave V4 was launched on September 25 at the Equities Hub in Base, introducing seven tokenized U.S. stocks issued by Coinbase into a mortgage lending scenario. According to BlockBeats, eligible non-US users can borrow Apple, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla's tokenised shares as collateral against USDC. This is a small scale test of connecting real asset world assets with DeFi lending parameters on Base, which also means that equity class assets are starting to enter liquid market chains as mortgages.
Borrowing limits are determined by the initial amount and mortgage rate.
The market has multiple caps: a total collateral limit of approximately $29 million in equity, a USDC supply limit of $32 million and a borrowing ceiling of $21 million. Different stocks have mortgage rates ranging from 65% to 79%, and the amount that users can borrow is directly correlated with the valuation of the collaterals and asset class risk. Chainlink provides an on-chain price predictor for mortgage valuations.
Causes and consequences of tokenized U.S. stocks entering loan agreements
Aave has previously built a lending market primarily around crypto-assets, where collateral is mostly native assets on chains such as stablecoins and mainstream tokens. After the inclusion of tokenised U.S. stocks issued by Coinbase, users can obtain USDC liquidity without directly selling equity-type assets. The agreement requires simultaneous handling of stock price fluctuations, mortgage rate differentials, asset issuer restrictions and chain valuation mechanisms.
Follow-up and impact
Aave stated that more Coinbase tokenized stocks and GHO loan assets may be added in the future, subject to governance and risk assessment. Aave disclosed a cumulative deposit size of 3.6%. If further expanded, Aave's market on Base will expand from its current USDC-based lending configuration to greater dollar liquidity and more equity collateral. For readers it is worth watching not for the concept itself but whether the newly added asset brings more complex settlement risks, forecast engine updates and rate management issues.
