The labelThis is the first time that I've been able to get my hands on one of these: Vitalik, native AI, edge model, offline app, mobile end intelligence

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said in an X Platform post published on September 26 that his recent experience with mobile end offline native knowledge applications has markedly improved compared to its self-built version two months ago; however, the response speed and output efficiency of a cell phone is still not as good as a laptop when dealing with complex problems. This model expression displays the progress of local AI alongside borders: lateral capabilities are improving but there's still a distance from being able to ask questions about all real world information.

Compared to two months ago, edge-side AI enters the available observation period

Vitalik mentions that two months ago, he built a comparison version of the app himself. He explains that mobile offline knowledge applications are not just staying in concept demonstrations but have entered a stage where they can be repeatedly tested and compared with specific Q&A effects. Offline operation means users do not need to pass every question to the cloud, reduce privacy exposure, reduce network dependency, and is better suited for weak networks, travel or data-limited scenarios.

But complex problems are still limited. Such tasks often require longer context, more reasoning steps and larger models or higher-quality queries. Laptops typically have more computational power, memory and heat dissipation to run larger models and perform more sophisticated local queries; mobile devices are constrained by batteries, chips and storage, often using only smaller models, quantized versions or restricted contextual windows.

Why travel queries are shortlisted

Vitalik specifically mentioned the weakest performance in specialized travel queries, and cited as an example the best vegetarian restaurant in my city. While this seems like a daily problem, it relies on local knowledge, real-time information, geographical location, user preferences and recommendation ordering.

In an offline environment, applications cannot access maps, reviews, restaurant databases or real-time recommendation systems at any time and rely only on preconfigured knowledge and limited local searching. If the device does not have relevant city data installed, or if knowledge updates are delayed, it is easy to give generic, outdated or inoperable answers. That is, travel queries expose not just model scale issues but also lack of dynamic real-world data for offline scenarios.

What it means for the average user

The value of such assessments lies in delineating the boundaries between uses. Mobile offline knowledge applications are suitable for tasks like basic Q&A, local information retrieval, rough pre-travel planning and simple interpretation in a non-networked environment; but in scenarios requiring real-time facts, professional recommendations, complex reasoning and cross-source validation, offline results are better suited as drafts or references rather than sole basis.

Users should also not equate offline filtering automatically with more privacy or greater accuracy. Offline reduces outbound data, but local storage is still at risk of device leakage; off-line does not rely on the network and may reduce its precision due to a lack of updates. The key for developers is not simply plugging large models into phones, but doing small models, local searches, uncertainty prompts, and supplementing Internet queries after user authorization.

Follow-up

Vitalik expects further improvements in the future, with mobile or offline access to real-world information. The next concern is how vendors choose between endpoint computing power, local knowledge base, privacy protection and real-time data. Mobile AI will be more useful if there are more reliable off-line retrieval solutions for high frequency scenarios; Cloud collaboration and on-premises privacy will remain a long-term dividing line if it remains limited to updates of knowledge and algorithms.
