Tether at one point froze THORChain’s assets on TRON.
Tether briefly blacklisted four THORChain treasury addresses on the TRON network, freezing about 1.45 million USDT and causing TRON-related swaps and some functions to pause, according to The Defiant. The addresses were removed from the blacklist after about three hours, and the balances remained intact.
A short freeze on TRON-linked operations
The disruption affected THORChain’s TRON-related swaps and some associated functions while the four addresses were blacklisted. THORChain co-founder Chad Barraford said the team did not receive advance notice before Tether added the addresses to the blacklist.
After roughly three hours, Tether lifted the blacklist for those four addresses, allowing THORChain to restore the affected functions. At that time, another 19 addresses included in the same batch remained blacklisted. Tether had not explained why the addresses were frozen, and it could not be confirmed that the action was linked to a specific theft incident.
Why the episode matters
For THORChain users, the practical impact was a temporary pause in TRON-related operations, not a permanent loss of USDT balances. The episode shows how an issuer-controlled USDT blacklist can interrupt a protocol’s on-chain activity even when the tokens themselves remain in the addressed wallets.
It also leaves open whether the remaining 19 blacklisted addresses were part of the same operational risk, and whether Tether will later provide a reason for the freeze.
