United States wants to build the stablecoin as a weapon for maintaining US hegemony

According to Bloomberg on Wednesday, the Trump administration is considering forming a joint venture with United States private companies in order to push the US dollar into overseas markets. The plan could involve Treasury and State departments as well as the International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), which aims to consolidate the US's status as global reserve currency while creating new buyers for its bonds.

At the heart of the plan: government-private partnerships

According to Bloomberg, citing people with knowledge of the matter (anonymous), the idea behind this plan is to create a joint venture between United States 's government and private sector so that overseas users can continue using US dollars and generate continued growth in demand for its sovereign debt.

The mechanism is not complicated: the more stablecoin s in circulation overseas, the more reserves an issuer stores in United States government bonds. International Development Finance Corporation (IDFC) is a body that invests jointly with governments and private companies to serve foreign policy objectives of United States , headed by Ben Black, son of Apollo Global Management co-founder Leon Black.

The legal basis is in place.

The plan did not come out of nowhere. Federal law stablecoin , the GENIUS Act, signed by Trump last year, requires issuers to provide adequate reserves for each token in cash and assets such as short-term government bonds.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has publicly articulated this logic on several occasions: the stablecoin is not a threat to US dollar hegemony, but an instrument for locking in the status of the dollar. This week Deputy Minister Francis Brooke said that issuers already hold close to $200 billion worth of short-term government bonds - a figure the administration hopes will underpin what's coming next.

Disagreements with other countries

Behind this is a race for the digital currency orbit. China has launched e-CNY and the European Central Bank (ECB) is pushing ahead with the digital euro, while BRICS countries are exploring possibilities.

But there is a distinct difference: China has officially banned stablecoin , and European Central Bank Governor Christine Lagarde explicitly opposes the use of euro-denominated stablecoin as an inefficient way to promote the euro. Neither of these large economies wants private firms involved in monetary policy, whereas United States instead sees private issuers as extended vehicles for policy.

What it means for the average user

The stablecoin is already a commonly used payment and custodian tool for users who send remittances to overseas diplomats, buy dollar-denominated goods or are in the midst of rapid currency depreciation. If Washington really enters this link as a business partner, then the $ United States strategy and foreign policy considerations will be embedded directly into ordinary people's remittance and payments infrastructure.

Follow-up points of interest include: how the specific joint venture architecture is designed, which private entities are selected and what role do institutions such as DFC have in actual funding and regulation.
