US SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce Will Leave Her Post on October 2
BlockBeats reported on September 26 that US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) commissioner Hester Peirce has formally submitted her resignation and will leave the agency on October 2. Her departure ends about eight years at the SEC, where she became known in the crypto sector as Crypto Mom for her long-standing call for a clear, rules-based regulatory framework for digital assets.
Role in crypto policy work
Peirce had served concurrently as head of the SEC crypto task force since February 4, 2025. In that role, she pushed for research into how existing securities laws should apply to digital assets and decentralized systems. Her commissioner term expired in June 2025, but under the relevant rules she could remain in place for about 18 months until a successor took office.
Next academic appointment
Peirce is expected to join the Regent University School of Law in Virginia in November as an associate professor. Her teaching and research will focus on federal litigation, securities regulation and digital assets.
Short-term effect on the SEC
Once Peirce leaves, the SEC will temporarily have only two Republican members: Chair Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda. The vacant seat may not be filled immediately, which means the commission’s membership will remain reduced for the near term.
