Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade Has Been Deployed on the Developer Network and Test Network.
Solana’s consensus upgrade Alpenglow has gone live on Devnet and Testnet after switching to Testnet on September 24 and Devnet on September 25, according to a PANews report on September 26 citing CoinDesk. The upgrade is now running on both public test networks so application teams can test compatibility before a mainnet launch. Its target is to cut final confirmation time from about 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds.
How the upgrade would shorten finality
Alpenglow aims to complete consensus in one to two voting rounds by letting validators exchange votes directly instead of writing votes as transactions into blocks. The approximately 150-millisecond figure is a simulation target and has not been verified in a real mainnet environment.
What developers and users may notice
The Solana Foundation said transaction statistics that include validator votes may decline after the upgrade, while user payments and transaction volume may not fall in the same way. Applications that only send transactions and read account balances do not need to migrate.
What to watch next
The remaining question is how the upgrade performs once it leaves the test networks and is measured in real conditions. Wallet processing and exchange deposit confirmations may still add waiting time, even though the consensus target is much faster.
