ETF Huge outflows threatened Bitcoin Vulnerable $86,000 rally
Guided tours
Bitcoin rebounded 11.65% this week, and evidence has now accumulated that there is real cash and on-chain involvement behind the rally rather than just technical behavior driven by headwinds. This judgement is important because it determines whether a bounce can be sustained: if buyers are coming from forced breakeven heads, the trend tends to be difficult to sustain; while intervention by commodity buyers implies more solid demand fundamentals.
According to CryptoSlate market data, Bitcoin was trading at $85,877 in the European Union on September 22. Glassnode noted in its latest market snapshot that the asset is up more than 10% from Sunday's close and has crossed the $80,000 threshold for the first time in nearly two weeks.
Significant improvement in physical and on-chain engagement
Mechanical factors played a significant role in Bitcoin's previous breakthrough of $85,000. CryptoSlate reported on September 21 that CoinGlass data showed more than $648 million worth of cryptocurrency open positions were liquidated as prices rose.
But compulsory buying will eventually be exhausted by the liquidation of vulnerable positions. Therefore, the previous upswing leaves a key question: Will active buyers continue to exist after the squeeze ends?
Glassnode's September 21 data provides the first positive evidence that spot-only flows reflect an imbalance in exchanges' aggressive market price listings, which shift from net sales to net purchases and are accompanied by increased trading volumes, indicating that buyers are increasingly proactively trading at market prices.
Fixed-term contracts also move from large net sales to net purchases, but this indicator is in the derivatives market. Leveraged and liquidation risk exists for fixed-term positions whereas completed spot purchases represent another independent channel of demand. The simultaneous transition between the two broadens participation, although it remains unclear how long either group will last.
The on-chain data further reinforces the positive aspect. It is possible to estimate the overall cost base of the entire network by using a price measurement based on the last time each bitcoin was transferred onto the chain at its market value. Its monthly change in Glassnode's high bandwidth indicates that tokens are being revalued for higher prices.
It is important to note that the indicator should be viewed as an on-chain valuation rather than a literal cash inflow, and it neither identifies buyers nor quantifies how many dollars actually went into bitcoin.
This determination makes the contrast with the previous week even clearer. CryptoSlate had reported a contraction on September 15 after 27 consecutive days of gains in market capitalization; and by Glassnode's reporting on September 21, monthly changes were back above the high-end range. These two sets of data show that the previous contractions have been read as stronger monthly generations when Bitcoin was testing at $86,000, showing significant improvement in cost base signals along the chain.
Leverage level test bounces back
Glassnode's derivative data sets the boundary for multiple interpretations.
Forward NPLs are above the high range, and capital rates are similarly elevated. This means that more traders have to pay in order to maintain a leverage. Higher NLP contracts expand the size of positions that may be forced to liquidate during severe volatility, while higher capital rates raise the cost of holding a position for leveraged buyers.
Option holdings show another imbalance: the outstanding contract is above the high range, close to $41 billion; implied volatility and the difference between realized volatility are further explored below the low range, indicating that the options market priced future fluctuations lower than Bitcoin's recent actual performance. The bias is slightly skewed downward toward the option but still within its normal range.
These readings by themselves are not indicative of a reversal, but together they suggest that once prices fluctuate sharply, the market needs to digest more.
Profit chips pose another absorption dilemma. Glassnode estimates that about two-thirds of the Bitcoin supply is in profit mode. Unrealized gains and realized profits are on average higher than their respective ranges, indicating that holders have both the ability and willingness to cash out at a profit.
Continued spot purchases will provide deeper pools of demand for these reversals; and if there is a decline in the spot market, prices will become more dependent on leveraged traders with increased liquidity-driven volatility risks.
ETF activity also serves as a reminder that the demand recovery is uneven. Glassnode reported on September 21 that net weekly ETF outflows were about $300 million. This lagging indicator covers fund redemptions through institutional channels within the one-week window, with exchange cash flow and monthly changes in market capitalization divided into different observation dimensions.
Deribit's Bitcoin options will expire on September 25 at 08:00 UTC according to its published contract date. This point may form a hedging and fluctuation window, but does not constitute a directional signal in itself.
Concluding remarks
Bitcoin will have a more solid foundation for the next phase if the exchange's cash-and-money flows remain positive, market value growth is sustained and futures rates are cooled; on the contrary, this rally will be increasingly exposed to the forced easing mechanism that accelerated its rise during the opening stage.
