Bitcoin breaks through $87,000 after sword pointing to 90,000 yuan, but historical law hides the front door
Bitcoin closed the week of September 20 at $81,178, its first close above the 50-week average since November 2025, followed by a further rally to over $87,000 in one trading day. The breakout missed the most-watched technical gate for the market, but it remains an open question whether or not buyers can hold onto this position.
Recovering a book of history
Galaxy Research studied 13 previous instances of the Bitcoin round recovering from a 50-week average. After 11 of these reversals, the low of bear market was not broken again; in five complete rounds that had missed this indicator, there were four first-round reverses which happened to constitute the final bottom.
However, it should be noted that Galaxy's sample is repeatedly from the same market cycle and its small sample size makes it difficult to give too much weight by this rule alone. The round closed at $81,178, while the 50-week average line was located at $78,820, with a recovery rate of about 3%.
Is it a real need or an illusion?
Nansen senior research analyst Nicolai Sondergaard points out the structural problems behind this rally: even if prices break higher, large traders on Hyperliquid still have a net shortfall and on-chain data shows that more than Bitcoin flowed into exchanges in the two days before and after the breakout.
He writes in his report that the move to $84,000 at Bitcoin was not a clean macro-driven pullback, but rather a combination of demand rewarming and large-scale overhead squeezing.
He also observes that funds have flowed into highly elastic sectors such as borrowing, earnings classes and RWA -related token , with the market exhibiting selective concentration characteristics. In his view, the current pattern is better suited to be described as a tactical risk preference upswing rather than an established new round of fundraising cycles.
Glassnode found in a study dated September 21 that the spot order book of traffic turned positive, which was a true demand signal. However, over the same period, outstanding futures contracts, funding rate , and realized profit margins rose simultaneously, and the agency's weekly indicator for ETF - traffic remained negative with a gap of about $300 million.
What conditions must be met for a follow-up?
Sondergaard attributes the next phase of testing to two conditions: continued short-term buying and selling, as well as a correction in capital inflows. These are the key points that distinguish between stability on the bull market and recession at the end of a bear market.
Specifically, $85,000 is the first observation point that he would like to see forming a true support after it has been tested repeatedly. Above this $87,000 constitutes a retested level; $90,000 represents the next integer psychological closure and $92,000 marks his further resistance zone. All of this will be possible if spot demand continues and macro news stays stable.
On a macro level, the Fed raised its target interest rate range to 3.75%-4% on September 16, leaving room for officials to raise rates again later in the year. James Butterfill of CoinShares warned two days later that persistent inflation and high yields could delay a sustained recovery at Bitcoin , which he thought was unlikely even to break $80,000. The return of oil prices and US bond yields on September 21 coincided with this turnaround; if both were reversed, tightening financial conditions would also backfire.
Rapid action by regulators amid congressional deadlock
The Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act on September 15. Two days later, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued a five-year conditional temporary waiver allowing eligible exchanges to trade U.S. securities under designated safeguards. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) also separately submitted an initial regulatory filing covering crypto asset transactions with markets for review at the federal level.
Diana Pires, sFOX's Chief Commercial Officer believes there is deliberate preparation behind this timing. She said in the report: "The defeat of the CLARITY Act was not a starting point for these agencies to decide on action but rather a trigger for their prepared programs". She added that institutional waivers and rule-making would have moved faster than legislation, and future regulators or governments could more easily tighten or revoke those arrangements than Congress legislates, so it should be seen as genuine transition space.
The CFTC's filings are still in the early stages of submission and a final request has not yet been made public. What these two initiatives mean for Bitcoin is mainly reflected at the level of institutional confidence that even if Congress fails to pass complete market structure legislation, construction on United States market infrastructure will continue.
Breakthroughs are built from the ground up.
A multi-headed scenario would require a clear correction of spot demand in sync with the ETF cash flow over the next few days, allowing the Bitcoin to hold its support after repeated testing at $85,000. On this path, retesting and breaking through $87,400 will open up space for $90,000 or even $92,000, and this round of 50-week average recoveries will also join Galaxy's list of historical successes.
The bullish scenario is ETF with continued negative cash flow, continuing net inflows from exchanges and leverage growth above the capacity of spot demand. At that point, Bitcoin breaks below $85,000, falls back to a peripheral closure at $81,178, eventually returning to hit the median line of $78,820, which itself turns into an apparently persistent reversal shortly after squeezing the bullish position.
Bitcoin has crossed the most important technological threshold in historical data. The performance of its $85,000 first line over the next few days will determine whether history repeats itself this time around.
