After Bitcoin breaks $86,000, the market's eyes have shifted to the $90,000 threshold

CryptoSlate, a crypto data platform, showed that Bitcoin touched $87,363 in the past 24 hours, setting a new high since January of this year and then falling back to around $85,824 at press time. The rise broke through an area of resistance for months of repeated suppression and accumulation of large numbers of blank tickets, and has forced nearly $90,000 into the general market spotlight.

Breaking through the chains behind it with technical signals

On-chain analytics firm Glassnode noted that after about 300 days of running below the long-term averages, this rally put Bitcoin back on top of all major longer term averages. At the same time, the coin's price also rebounded to above real market median and short-term holding cost lines, which are commonly used as indicators to distinguish between sustained strong momentum and weaker market structure.

Activity on the chain is also heating up. Bitview data shows that more than one million bitcoins were transferred over the last week, totaling more than $92 billion, making it the highest per-week volume in four years and even exceeding the level of activity at bitcoin's phased peak in October 2025.

Leverage reversal: cleanup, multi-headed reconstruction

Bitcoin's rapid breakout of $86,000 is closely related to the previous large-scale shorting layouts by traders in the region. The repeated attacks on the range between about $82,000 and $86000 have prompted investors to sell high and accumulate blanks, which are gradually being seen as solid resistance levels. Once prices break through, loss-making openings are forced into a flat position, whereby the original pressure turns into compulsory buybacks.

CoinGlass data showed that more than $1 billion in short positions were cleared during the round. Alphractal CEO Joao Wedson said this move touched off one of the largest free-float clearing zones over the past year, after Bitcoin's previous decline saw multiple leverage levels go through a wash and derivatives positions completed a weight adjustment.

However, the risk direction has changed since the reset. According to Alphractal's estimates, about 71% of outstanding positions are multi-headed and only 29% have no head at all - a gap that is uncommon after its historic high in October 2025.

Glassnode said that with the coin trading around $86,000, multiple leverage in the options market is gradually receding and bearish-to-bearish ratios for NPLs are rising, but overall positions remain well below the speculative extreme of the previous round's high point.

The wider derivatives activity recovered more quickly. Santiment noted that despite the liquidation of empty positions, total crypto outstanding contracts in all markets rose by 7.6% to about $156 billion and transaction volume grew 39%. This indicates that traders rebuilt their positions rapidly after emptying rather than borrowing from the marketplace.

Option layout focused on $90,000 close

With the change in leverage structure, market sentiment has also shifted significantly. Santiment said that bullish discussions around bitcoin and crypto markets have reached their highest intensity since 2024, with the Fear & Greed Index approaching the extreme greed zone after breaking through.

Options markets reacted directly to this. Deribit data showed that the nominal value of Bitcoin open-ended contracts at $90,000 was about $2.7 billion, with $95,000 and $100,000 worth approximately $27.3 billion and $2.2 billion respectively, for a total of around $7.7 billion in three places. At current prices, bitcoin only needs to rise by less than 5% to reach $90000, which is therefore an immediate reference point for the market. It should be noted that holdings on options include both buyers and sellers simultaneously; the number itself does not represent directional betting but indeed reflects where traders are concentrated after the bullish zone has been cleared.

As the $86,000 zone is essentially a buy-and-hold release, the next phase of gains will be more dependent on new funds and whether rebuilt multihead positions can withstand retracement tests. The structure has also become more fragile as bullish sentiment heats up in tandem with options openings. Bitcoin traders are no longer concerned about whether bitcoin will break out of its old range but how far this round of breakouts could go.
