Jeff Walton: How Strive has dramatically improved its Bitcoin buying strategy
Strive has been one of the best-performing stocks in the Russell 2000 Index for nearly a month, and its chief risk officer Jeff Walton said in an interview with Bitcoin Magazine that the company is doubling Bitcoin 's holdings at a rate of about every 12 weeks. In conversations with Grace Remington and Sean Hagan, Walton detailed how the company managed liquidity during its rapid expansion, why it surpassed $2.5 billion in total balance sheet size, and how common stock and preferred equity ATM mechanisms funded the purchase of Bitcoin . He also analyzed the impact on leverage levels and future product layouts after the October 13 expiration of the $700 million share warrant.
Bringing reinsurance risk methodology into the Bitcoin domain
At the beginning of the interview, Walton introduced his background in applying the reinsurance industry's risk management framework to Bitcoin asset configurations. In his view, it is easier to build data models than traditional equity markets because on-chain data are publicly transparent and verifiable in real time, and calculations for risk apertures are clearer.
$2.5 billion balance sheet and source of funds
Walton revealed that the balance sheet strength of Strive has exceeded $2.5 billion. The company continues to finance through both ordinary share ATM (market price issuance) and preferred stock ATM channels, with proceeds being used for Bitcoin 's accumulated allocation. He said that while the company is rapidly adding inventory, it maintains a sound management of liquidity, avoiding excessive pressure from expansion too fast.
25% to 50% threshold yields and the breakdown of four-cycle theory
Walton introduced Strive's internally set 25% to 50% Bitcoin threshold rate of return, which is only executed by capital operations that meet this expected return. He argued that the traditional four-year cycle rule was fundamentally breaking down and changes in market structure and sources of funds were lowering the reference value for historical cyclical rules. At the same time he emphasized that trust itself is the infrastructure of capital markets and liquidity is key to checking this infrastructure.
The market is underestimating systemic credit risk
At the end of the interview, Walton made his most central point: that there is a systematic underestimation in the market as a whole about the likelihood of some sort of credit risk event occurring. The $700 million bond expires on Oct. 13, and if exercised by holders it will provide an injection of capital into the company, lowering leverage, and opening up space for subsequent product layouts. In his view, this systemic credit risk is the variable investors should be most concerned with.
Concluding remarks
Walton's interview provides a sampling of the Bitcoin Reserve Company operating model from the perspective of traditional risk managers, covering multiple layers such as financing mechanisms, risk control frameworks and macro judgments to provide reference for observing this emerging trajectory.
