Bitcoin surges as the Nasdaq hits record highs and oil prices fall on hopes of easing Iran tensions.
Bitcoin Clears $86,559 as Total Crypto Market Cap Tops $3 Trillion While Federal Reserve Liquidity Operations and Altcoins Support the Move
Description: Bitcoin traded near $86,559 on Tuesday after a 12.2% weekly gain, pushing total crypto market capitalization above $3 trillion while the Crypto Fear & Greed Index reached 79. The breakout followed a risk-on shift on Wall Street, with the Nasdaq Composite setting records as AI-linked chipmakers extended a winning streak. Oil prices fell after reports that Iran offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if Washington eased pressure. At the same time, the Federal Reserve had raised rates to 3.75%-4% but resumed short-term Treasury bill purchases, leaving a split signal for markets. The next Federal Reserve policy meeting is October 27-28.

Bitcoin Breaks Above a September Ceiling
Bitcoin traded near $86,559 on Tuesday after punching through $86,500 and holding just above the ceiling that had capped the rally through most of September. The weekly gain was 12.2%, and the move cleared a resistance band that had capped the price since early September. A resistance band is a price range where selling pressure has repeatedly limited upward moves.
The breakout put total crypto market capitalization above $3 trillion, while the Crypto Fear & Greed Index read 79, solidly in greed territory. The Altcoin Season Index stood at 49, showing that Bitcoin still led even as other digital assets began to move.
The breakout matters because it aligned with a broader risk-on mood on Wall Street. Risk-on describes a market mood in which investors favor assets with higher price swings. The Nasdaq Composite closed at a record on Monday, up 2.26% for its best day since June, as AI-linked names climbed. Intel jumped 12%, AMD gained about 10% and crossed a $1 trillion market cap, and chipmakers extended their rally into Tuesday for their longest winning stretch since April. On Tuesday, the Nasdaq was up 0.4% and touched a fresh intraday high, while the S&P 500 barely budged.
Falling Oil and Geopolitical Headlines Supported the Mood
Energy prices helped shape the session. Brent crude briefly slipped below $98 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate crude fell under $93, their lowest since September 8, after reports that Iran offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within days if Washington eased pressure. President Donald Trump told the United Nations General Assembly he expects a deal with Iran right after the election, referring to November's midterms, while Saudi Arabia works to restart its East-West pipeline by the weekend.
Higher Rates, Less Liquidity Drain
The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4% on September 16, its first hike since 2023, in a unanimous 12-0 vote. Hot inflation data forced the move: the Producer Price Index accelerated to 5.4% annually in August, and gasoline drove a third of that month's Consumer Price Index gain.
Even while raising rates, the Federal Reserve has continued adding liquidity. It resumed regular purchases of short-term Treasury bills in December 2025 and has continued doing so to keep bank reserves ample. Ample reserves means banks have enough cash to meet obligations without stress. The operation is distinct from rate policy. Those purchases absorb Treasury supply and keep cash flowing to buyers of risk assets, working somewhat against the tightening effect of the rate increase.
The result is a rare combination: higher rates, but a Federal Reserve balance sheet no longer draining the system. The Federal Reserve's bond holdings sit near $6.7 trillion, still well below the $9 trillion peak of 2022 but no longer shrinking.
Chart Levels Put Attention Above $90,000
On the daily chart, Bitcoin cleared the zone between $79,673 and $84,144 and is now testing a trajectory to around $90,000. The price is again in a golden cross, a pattern traders widely recognize as bullish that forms when the average price of the last 50 days crosses on top of the average price of the last 200 days.
In the technical framework cited by traders, if buyers keep control, Fibonacci extensions, a method traders use to project levels beyond the current move, place the next targets at $90,763 and $95,074. A failure to hold the $79,673 zone on a pullback opens the path back to $75,436 and then $73,617, the last defended support zones from the summer.
Prediction Markets and Altcoins Show Mixed Leadership
Sentiment on prediction markets moved in the direction that might be expected. On Myriad, a prediction market developed by Decrypt's parent company Dastan, traders are pricing in 48% odds that Bitcoin hits $90,000 this month, against 25% odds it heads to $92,500.
Altcoins are catching a bid too. XRP climbed to $1.57, Solana gained 18.2% over the week, and Zcash extended its multi-month tear to $1,551, up 36.7% over seven days. Of the top 100 coins, 97 are reporting a positive performance over the last seven days.
Next Dates to Watch
The Federal Reserve's next policy meeting lands October 27-28, when markets will learn whether September's hike was a one-off response to an oil shock or the first of several planned this year. The Federal Reserve's median 2026 projection puts the federal funds rate at 4.1% by year-end.
The immediate question is whether Bitcoin can hold the zone it reclaimed after the Federal Reserve meeting. The same policy backdrop that lifted risk assets also creates a clear date for the next decision, while the Altcoin Season Index and prediction-market odds show that the current rally remains broad but still Bitcoin-led.
