Limit Bitcoin crypto miner Why electricity supplies may consume more energy

The variable difficulty of some Bitcoin mining vardiff controllers has a hidden danger: when the miner reduces its processing power, it may still follow the task difficulty set for its original processing speed. As a result, miners continue to run and consume electricity continuously, but the effective share submitted becomes extremely scarce.

Bitcoin technology briefing Bitcoin Optech on September 18 highlighted this failure pattern, bringing it to wider attention in an analysis published by mining engineer Eric Price in July. It should be noted that the issue involves the share difficulty of allocating a mine pool rather than the bitcoin network itself; what it describes is a verifiable controller flaw and not evidence of widespread losses suffered by miners.

Why is Vardiff stuck in the mud?

Mining pools assign each connection a share of difficulty that is less than the Bitcoin block hardness. The higher the difficulty, the harder it will be to reach the corresponding quota target. The shares submitted by miners help the pool estimate computational power and record contribution workloads, while variable-difficulty vardiff controllers dynamically adjust this allocation so that shares arrive at reasonable frequency.

Price's analysis describes a trap that occurs after the miners have dropped their computing power: if the controller only recalculates the difficulty when it receives its quota, then an old and exaggerated set of difficulties makes it harder for the next one to appear. Without new quotas triggering updates, the controllers may maintain the wrong difficulty all the time, so the quota flow remains sparse.

Sudden power cuts are not uncommon in real-world operations. CryptoSlate has reported that miners cutting off electricity during a winter storm in the United States in January 2026 led to significant declines in computing power across the network, although this incident was not linked to vardiff.

What does this mean for miners?

Higher quota difficulty does not automatically erase expected returns for miners over the long term. As described in Braiins's pool documentation, pools can assign a higher book weight to rare high-difficulty certificates. The risk is reflected in actual settlement windows: if no effective shares are received during the settlement cycle, miners using the pay per share (PPS) model have no income in that zone; they may still be settled if only a small number of shares are delivered.

The current Stratum V2 reference implementation avoids permanent deadlock by recalculating the difficulty of a timer and adjusting it down when portions are depleted. However, analysis indicates that recovery may still be slower on long-lived connections. This timing mechanism belongs to the reference implementation and is not available for every deployment allowed under the StratumV2 protocol.

Both Analyst and Optech cite ckpool as a deployed example of the use of quota triggering mechanisms. The extent to which such practices are common in practice, or whether they have caused material damage, has not been estimated from existing public data.

How operators verify themselves

Mine operators can now test this behavior directly. The MARA Foundation's open-source shape-proxy tool confirms the share locally, while only forwarding a controlled proportion of shares to the mine pool. Setting calculation curves such as ladders, slopes or stagnation allows miners to see that the calculated force is decreased and the actual output of the miner does not change.

A decrease in the difficulty allocated to a test indicates that there is a recovery path for the controller being tested; if the target difficulty remains unchanged, it indicates slow or absent recovery under this test curve and observation window. However, timer cycles, connection times, and randomness of portion arrivals may affect the results.
