Federal prosecutors in Manhattan lead investigation into Binance 's compliance with Iran sanctions: Bloomberg
The Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office is investigating whether Binance ( Binance ) knowingly authorized transactions in violation of the Iran sanctions, as reported by Bloomberg on Tuesday.
The Justice Department's Criminal Division is also involved in the investigation.
Bloomberg cited people with knowledge of the matter as saying that the Justice Department's United States Criminal Division in Washington, D.C., was also involved in the investigation.
In response to a request for comment on the matter, Binance spokesperson told Cointelegraph: "We have a zero-tolerance policy towards sanctions violations. We cooperate fully with law enforcement and are always committed to identifying and removing offenders".
However, the statement did not directly address whether Binance was aware of the investigation mentioned in the above report.
Investigation does not mean violation
It should be noted that the investigation itself does not amount to a finding of misconduct, and may end without any charges being brought.
In March, the Wall Street Journal reported that United States was investigating whether Iran had used its platform to circumvent sanctions against it, citing internal documents and people familiar with the matter. The newspaper said at the time that it was unclear if the Justice Department's investigation targeted either Binance itself or its users, or both.
At the time, Binance responded to Cointelegraph by stating that it was not aware of a Justice Department investigation.

It is also reported that in the context of United States 's questioning of Iranian sanctions on Binance , some senators have requested an update from the Binance compliance watchdog.
