Soda Labs Secures $3 Million to Enable Private Computation on Public Blockchains

The round and the problem

NextBlock, a Luxembourg-based venture firm, invested $3 million in Soda Labs, funding the company's entire seed round. Soda is building privacy infrastructure based on garbled circuits and multiparty computation. The aim is to let financial applications process confidential data while remaining connected to public blockchains.

Public blockchains can prove what happened. That proof is useful for shared settlement and programmable assets, but it also exposes information that banks may not want to place in the open. The investment targets that contradiction.

Why institutions want privacy without leaving public chains

Banks generally do not want to publish client activity, positions or commercial information to a global audience. That has pushed some institutions toward private or permissioned chains, where visibility is restricted from the beginning.

Soda is betting that institutions may prefer a different path: remain connected to public networks while introducing confidentiality at the computation layer. The company has spent roughly two and a half years developing a system that lets applications perform calculations on private data without revealing the raw data to every observer of the chain.

The relevant categories may include transaction details, balances, business logic or other information that cannot simply be disclosed publicly.

How Soda plans to make confidential computation practical

Soda says its technology uses established cryptographic components including the Advanced Encryption Standard and Secure Hash Algorithm 256 and is designed to run on ordinary cloud CPUs rather than requiring specialized hardware.

That design matters because privacy systems can be difficult to deploy if every user needs unusual infrastructure or if computation becomes prohibitively expensive. Soda says the architecture is meant for financial applications that still need to work with existing public blockchain ecosystems.

Garbled circuits encode inputs so they can be processed without revealing them, while multiparty computation lets several participants work on a shared calculation without exposing each other's private values. The approach does not try to hide the chain itself. It tries to keep the calculation layer confidential while leaving the network connected to public verification.

What tokenization changes and what still must be proven

The $3 million round is small compared with the largest crypto infrastructure financings, but the problem has become more valuable as tokenization expands.

A tokenized bond or fund can operate on a public chain while still carrying confidential information about counterparties, trading and ownership. Institutions need a way to show that rules were followed without disclosing every data item involved.

That demand is increasingly about selective confidentiality. Regulators, auditors or other authorized parties may need access to information while the wider public does not. Privacy is returning in a form different from the anonymous-transaction narrative that shaped earlier crypto cycles.

Soda must show that its cryptographic approach can deliver privacy without making applications too slow or too complex to use. The seed round gives Soda funding to test that claim, while NextBlock is betting $3 million that it can.

If public blockchains are going to host more conventional finance, the networks may need to offer proof of correctness while limiting what the public can see.
